Tom’s Shoes: A Beautiful Idea Possibly Done Bigger

Little children all over the world don’t have clothing, food, shoes, medicine, water, opportunity, and love. Such a large need that meeting it seems impossible-overwhelming. Tom’s Shoes is covering children’s feet all over the world. For every pair of shoes that are sold, one gets shipped to a child who needs it.

Tom’s Shoes has been expanding and is very successful! There isn’t much to criticize with this very giving and well-run organization. However, as always, more could be done to reach more people.

The style of Tom’s shoes is very specific and limited to a seemingly small audience. Living up north, I had never even heard of a Tom’s shoe before, however, on Southeastern’s campus, they seemed to be everywhere. Lately, though, they seem to be losing their popularity. They aren’t the newest thing anymore and because their shoe is so simple and repeated, the organization may begin to lose business and in turn, the ability to help others. Also, the shoes are very expensive. By dividing the price in half  (half for your pair and half for the pair given away) it makes sense that Tom’s must pay for the cost of the shoes, plus shipping to another country, and a profit. However, these shoes do not look like anything special and paying $84 dollars for a pair of flats that could be easily purchased at Cotton On for $15 seems like a rip-off. Why not just buy a bunch of non-name-brand shoes and send them overseas yourself? It just seems like an odd thing to do: sending designer shoes overseas when there is such a great need for shoes period. Perhaps broadening the style of shoe would increase customer interest and cause more shoes to be purchased? Or, by changing the materials used so that the shoes aren’t so expensive, more would be encouraged to buy. Either way, Tom’s is doing something remarkable and uncommon. Their heart is not set on making a profit, but on making a difference. I just wonder if more could be reached…

About lilhanlin

I like to think of this blog as a beautiful connection between my life, personal convictions, and daily whims to whoever takes a moment to pause and read- even if it's only to myself re-reading it a few months later. Too many things keep expression trapped inside of us, and it's such a necessary element of life - to self-express and to see emotion released in its rawest, most authentic form. Writing allows us to do that - to take the time to articulate exactly what we feel or what we don't quite understand but must speak out.

WOW! This is such an amazing post. I was not aware of everything that TOMs was doing to change the world. It is really amazing to see a company not think of themselves and help other people. I think that God blesses people that are not selfish and bless others. I believe that the reason that they are so successful is because of this reason. They are doing what Christ did, he helped others and put himself last.
